he next morning, the alarm clock went off and Alana opened her eyes blearily, feeling disoriented. Her body felt limp and satiated but her mind was reeling. Slowly, she sat up, turning off the insistent alarm. And then the night before came rushing back to her.

“Oh shit,” she whispered to herself, her dry lips cracking on the word. How could she have been so stupid as to have slept with her boss? Things like that never ended well. What if Jack decided she was unprofessional and wasn’t to be trusted with his daughter? What if he regretted the night before and fired her just to save himself the embarrassment of having her around?

“You idiot,” she mumbled to herself, rubbing her temples. She wasn’t hungover, but almost. And she was dying of thirst.

Throwing back her blankets, Alana headed for the shower. At least if she was going to get fired, she was going to look good doing it.

Coming out of her room half an hour later, Alana felt and looked way better, though she was still dreading seeing Jack. She’d put her thick hair up in a loose bun and put on her favorite red top to give herself some confidence. Lottie always said she looked like an old-fashioned movie star in that top and the matching lipstick she always wore with it.

Speaking of whom - Alana headed for the child’s room. Jack wouldn’t say anything in Lottie’s presence, surely? She’d be safe with Lottie for a little while at least.

But her plans were foiled - halfway to Lottie’s room she heard a familiar voice calling her name. Swallowing, Alana stopped and turned to face Jack.

He was as beautiful as always, dressed in a crisp white shirt and grey slacks, ready for a day at the office. “Good morning,” he said, smiling, clearly giving her a once-over.

“Hi,” Alana smiled weakly, shoving her hands into the pockets of her black skinny jeans.

Jack came to stand next to her, close enough that she could smell his familiar, heady cologne. “I’ve always loved that shirt,” he told her softly, dipping his head closer to her so that she could hear.

“Really?” Alana asked, honestly surprised. She’d never realized he had any opinions about her clothes. “Thanks. I - uh - Jack, I’m…”

“Do you want to have dinner with me tonight?” Jack interrupted her half-formed apology gently.

“What?” Alana blinked up at him, caught totally off guard. “Dinner?”

Jack nodded. “A real dinner. I mean, your grilled cheese was delicious, but I was thinking something a bit more...formal. There’s a new sushi place that’s opened up near my office. Everyone says it’s to die for. What do you think?”

“I…” Alana didn’t know what to think. “Are you asking me on a date?” she asked, then immediately wanted to slap herself.

But Jack just chuckled. “I am,” he said.

“You’re not...not going to fire me?” she asked, her voice very small.

It was Jack’s turn to be confused. “Fire...no! That’s the last thing I want to do. I mean…” And then his voice grew unsure.
